Columnist Peter Benton: SNJGA awards 14 scholarships

The Southern Nevada Junior Golf Association annually awards scholarships to college-bound SNJGA members.
The scholarship committee has selected 14 juniors to receive this year's grants.
Wayne Webb and Tarah Badger, both members of the SNJGA for more than nine years, have been selected as the recipients of the David Kish Memorial Scholarship, honoring the memory of Kish, who was a caddie at Shadow Creek until his untimely death in the sprint of 1998.
Jamie Chanin, an eight-year member of the SNJGA, received the Jim Shady Memorial Scholarship, which honors the memory of longtime junior golf supporter Jim Shaddy.
This year a total of $15,500 has been awarded for scholarships.
A complete list of the junior recipients and the colleges they will be attending are:
* Wayne Webb, David Kish Memorial Scholarship, University of Nevada-Reno.
* Tarah Badger, David Kish Memorial Scholarship, University of Nevada-Reno.
* Jamie Chanin, Jim Shaddy Memorial Scholarship, Columbia University.
* Zach Van Cleve, Sunset Station Junior Scholarship, University of Nevada-Reno.
* Molly Groebe, Sunset Station Junior Scholarship, University of Oregon.

Brent Carlson, Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah; Joe Matyos, University of Hawaii, Honolulu; Ashlei Pendleton, Texas Christian University, Fort Worth, Texas; Annie Schlosser, University of Missouri-Columbia, Columbia, Mo.; Candice Saip, Southwestern Oregon, Coos Bay, Ore., Mike Parish, Southern Utah University, Cedar City, Utah; Brad Callihan, Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, Okla.; Kelly Kennedy, Claremont McKenna College, Claremont, Calif.; Genevieve Ludwig, Western Montana College, Dillon, Mont.
* TOURNEY RESULTS: Beautiful weather and course conditions greeted the large field of golfers who assembled last week at the Las Vegas Country Club for the 24th annual First Security Bank Variety Club Golf Classic.
Forty percent of the A player's handicap and 10 percent of the B, C and D players' handicaps were used in this four-person scramble event.
Winning low-gross honors with a score of 20-under 52 was the foursome of Michael, Mark and Rhonda Mushkin and Steve Dorinson.
Narrowly winning low net at 51.2 was Steve Hayne's team of Mark Dreschler, Bruce Ford and Gary Kent.
Right behind them with 51.3 was the quartet of Dan Bisek, Henry Peredez, Tom Brennan and Tony Abbatugeb. In third place at 51.9 was the foursome of Tony Tegano, Steve Rossi, Jim Donofrio, and Keith Sauro.
Closest to the pin winners were Scotty O'Neil, Tom Brennan, Dennis Silvers and Rhonda Mushkin. The longest drive winners were Dan Albreghts and Joan Sessions.
Entries are presently being accepted for the annual Sons of Erin Golf Tournament, which this year will see all proceeds being donated to the local Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
This four-person scramble event (which has an $85 entrance fee per player) is scheduled for a 12:30 p.m. start on Saturday, Oct. 9, at the Highland Falls layout in Summerlin.
As always, this fun-filled tourney will have complimentary refreshments, prizes and an awards buffet plus entertainment at the conclusion of play.
