Bertha retiring from entertaining
Wednesday, Sept. 22, 1999 | 9:32 a.m.
No, not Wayne Newton. It's Bertha, "The Amazing Elephant."
The 49-year-old pachyderm began performing at John Ascuaga's Nugget in Sparks in 1962. Casino officials say she's being retired because of advancing age and arthritis in her feet.
Over the years she's shared the stage with legendary stars like Tony Bennett, Debbie Reynolds, Carol Channing and the late Liberace.
