About 100 acres have been targeted for the controlled burns in the wooded areas abutting residential areas in Incline Village.
It's the fifth fall in a year that the North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District has attempted to fight fire with fire.
The idea is to set the fires under the best of conditions when the winds are light and the brush isn't as dry as the summer months.
The prescribed burns were initiated after a computer model showed that a masday off the Mount Rose Highway near Apollo Way and off of Saddlehorn Drive near Crystal Bay.
"We like to call it surgica fire district has treated some 127 acres of the upscale north Lake Tahoe community with fire. In all, more than 700 acres are about their plans so they can leave for a while if necessary.
"We try to be sensitive to that because if the public doesn't like our smoke, our program won't exist."
