Letter: Spanish-speaking people should learn English in U.S.
Tuesday, Sept. 21, 1999 | 9:22 a.m.
Banks, offices, TV, radio and stores are all ready to please the Spanish language. Why? Why not Chinese, Japanese, German, Italian or my language, Hungarian?
I chose to come here. I have to speak English and I don't have a problem with that. Why can't the Spanish people learn English? Are they any better than the rest of us?
Don't get me wrong, they can keep up their own heritage, speak their own language at home, teach it to their kids, but don't expect all Americans to learn the Spanish language.
I expect to call a bank and not have to listen to 15 minutes of "would you like to listen in English or Spanish." They chose to live in the USA so they need to learn to speak English.
If I wanted to speak Spanish I would have moved to Mexico. Is this America or Mexico?
