Wednesday is "Walk Our Children to School Day."

Parents throughout the valley are encouraged to walk their children to and from school to learn the safest route.

This year's designated school for the event's assembly is Halle Hewetson Elementary School, 701 N. 20th St. Mayor Oscar Goodman and volunteers from the Clark County Safe Community Partnerships will be present at 8:30 a.m. to go over safety issues.

Parents and children walking to school throughout the valley will receive safe walking literature from crossing guards and volunteers.

Blue Moon Ball planned on Thursday

The Derfelt Senior Center will host its seventh annual "Blue Moon Ball" 6:30-10 p.m. Thursday at the Sammy Davis Jr. Festival Plaza in Lorenzi Park.

Larry Taylor, disc jockey at the Gold Coast hotel-casino, will be master of ceremonies and provide the dance music. Tickets are $5, refreshments will be available at nominal cost. Call 229-6602.

UNLV to host weekend events

UNLV is hosting a family weekend Friday and Saturday, featuring a poolside barbecue, a pregame tailgate party and a football game pitting the Rebels against the University of Utah.

Family members can choose to participate in all of the events or select individual events. From noon-7:30 p.m. Friday welcome tables will be set up in the Moyer Student Union, Room 111, where participants can pick up welcome packages and tickets for the weekend's events.

That night, families are invited to gather at the Hard Rock hotel-casino for a Caribbean poolside family feast 7-10 p.m. A barbecue buffet will be served. The event is $18 per person.

Y2K LV?

A forum on how well Nevada utilities are prepared for the so-called Y2K computer problems is being held 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Sawyer State Office Building, 555 E. Washington Ave., on the fourth floor.

Saks Fifth Avenue to host October benefit

Saks Fifth Avenue kicks off October as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month on Thursday with a nationwide shopping weekend to benefit the Council of Fashion Designer's of America's Fashion Targets Breast Cancer campaign.

The Las Vegas Chapter of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation has been chosen as the recipient of proceeds from the Nevada-based Saks Fifth Avenue stores. Call 733-8300.

Patients, doctors invited to conference

Local inflammatory bowel disease patients and health care professionals will have the opportunity to learn about the latest advances in treatment of the disease at a Las Vegas conference Thursday at the Holiday Inn Boardwalk on the Strip.

The class is part of a nationwide education program, "Advances in IBD: New and Current Treatments." It will be 6-9 p.m. Thursday. Doors open at 5 p.m. For registration call toll-free at 427-6463 or e-mail IBD@hbmadv.com.

Arthritis class

A class on arthritis presented by Dr. William Kim is being offered at 12:30 and 1:30 p.m. Sept. 28 by Senior Advantage in the Desert Springs Hospital Medical Center, 2075 E. Flamingo Road. Call 369-7911.

Grant-writing

The University of Nevada School of Medicine will host a program for the Federal Office of Rural Health Policy to provide assistance in the development of $600,000 grant proposals from 9 a.m.-noon Thursday at the Community College of Southern Nevada, 6375 W. Charleston Blvd., Building B, Room 118.

Immunizations

Health District immunization clinics are open each week in Southern Nevada. Immunizations are provided without charge to children and young adults under the age of 21 in any of four public health centers and 36 satellite clinics. The following clinics will be open this week, Wednesday through Sept. 28:
