LV company in medical merger

Associated Pathologists Laboratories of Las Vegas said it's merging with American Medical Laboratories Inc. of Chantilly, Va. Terms weren't disclosed.
The merged company will be renamed AML/APL Inc. AML and APL will continue to operate under their current corporate identities. APL, a 1,250-employee regional laboratory serving hospitals, physician offices and managed care organizations throughout the western United States, will keep its local operations and its 1,100 workers in Las Vegas.
"Insurance companies and managed care companies now prefer to contract with a single lab across the country because they want to increase their purchasing power. If you provide services in only one region as opposed to providing it on a nationwide basis, you could lose out on those contracts," said John Schwartz, APL's president.
