Group helps restore Yosemite National Park
More than 500 Boy Scouts from California and Nevada gathered Friday and Saturday in Yosemite National Park to clear brush from Yosemite Valley and assist in other tasks that help fire management teams restore part of the park to its natural state.
At the president's 1997 Summit for America's Future, the Boy Scouts committed to 200 million hours of community service by the end of 2000, a goal that can be accomplished if each scout completes a minimum of 12 hours of service.
The group that gathered over the weekend -- the Boy Scouts Order of the Arrow -- have pledged to complete 2,000 hours of community service at the park.
The group will also participate in training, competitions and fellowship held at Bridalveil Creek Campground.
The Boy Scouts Order of the Arrow, known to the scouting community as "The Brotherhood of Cheerful Service," recognizes scouts and scout leaders.
