Keep the pennies coming
Friday, Sept. 17, 1999 | 9:19 a.m.
Brother can you spare a penny?
The "Pennies by the Inch" campaign began Wednesday and will continue through Oct. 15.
The door-to-door campaign, which began 75 years ago as a "Penny Parade" with children giving pennies to match their age, has grown into a million-dollar fund-raiser supporting the charity care mission at Primary Children's Medical Center.
Based in Salt Lake City, the center is the pediatric referral center serving children in Utah, Wyoming, Idaho, Montana and Nevada.
All of the $1 million raised in last year's campaign went toward paying patient-care services. That contributes to the $6 million that was spent to provide medical care for thousands of children last year, Jodi Spencer, spokeswoman for the hospital, said.
Locally, volunteers in North Las Vegas will be calling households asking for donations. Envelopes will be distributed to those interested in contributing.
Anyone missed by volunteers who wants to make a donation may send contributions to Primary Children's Medical Center Foundation, 100 N. Medical Drive, P.O. Box 58249, Salt Lake City, UT, 84158-0249.
Those interested in volunteering may call (800) 762-7262.
