Firm providing DSL access in LV

Thursday, Sept. 16, 1999 | 11:46 a.m.

Covad Communications, a broadband access and service provider based in Santa Clara, Calif., plans to expand its digital subscriber line-based services to Las Vegas.

Bob McClain, director of marketing for the western region of Covad, said the company doesn't expect to sell directly to home users, but to Internet service providers and businesses that want to develop their own Internet portals.

The move into Las Vegas, which is expected to occur in the first quarter of 2000, is part of Covad's expansion into 49 new metropolitan areas nationwide. The company said its expansion will give it access to 40 percent of the nation's homes and businesses.

DSL service uses traditional copper telephone wires for simultaneous transmission of data and voice communications. It's about 29 times faster than traditional dial-up service offering speedier Internet images.

Covad would compete with MGC Communications, which is starting its DSL technology within weeks; Sprint, which will offer DSL by the end of the year and Nextlink and Cox Communications, which will offer Internet access with different technologies.

Covad is expected to have five administrators in Las Vegas and a team of technicians that will fluctuate based on installations.
