Arrest made after bank heist attempt
Thursday, Sept. 16, 1999 | 11:39 a.m.
A man was arrested today after attempting to rob the U.S. Bank at 801 E. Charleston Blvd. shortly after 9 a.m., Metro Police said.
In an apparent copy of a Sept. 8 heist at another bank, a man tried to leave a bag at the scene but was captured, police said.
In last week's robbery a man demanded money from a teller at Nevada State Bank, 201 S. Fourth St., and left a backpack at the scene, which he said contained a bomb.
The man escaped, police evacuated the building and the Las Vegas Fire Department bomb squad was called to the scene and found clothing inside the backpack.
It was not immediately known if the robberies were committed by the same man or if today's incident was a copycat crime.
