Letter: Consolidation of child care will raise cost

Tuesday, Sept. 7, 1999 | 9:32 a.m.

In February 1998 La Petite increased the rate by 17 percent for my daughter's part-time attendance. After the increase, the amount I paid each week was $68. Once again, in March 1999, La Petite increased the rate by another 10 percent. In addition to this charge, late fees equal $10 if tuition is paid one day after the deadline.

Similar to my experience with La Petite, I am curious whether Bright Start might increase its tuition. Just a few years ago, I recall paying the Children's Learning Center $85 for full-time child care. Since then, CLC, a company with five locations, was purchased by another large corporate enterprise.

As the consolidation of child-care facilities in the Las Vegas area continues, the number of locally owned enterprises seems to diminish. With fewer companies competing in this market, parents may face significantly higher costs for child-care attendance.
