Grand jury indicts pair in fatal carjacking

Tuesday, Sept. 7, 1999 | 11:12 a.m.

In a move that will expedite a trial, two people already charged in a carjacking that resulted in the death of one suspect and a motorcyclist have been indicted by a Clark County grand jury.

Jamie Lyn Aghas, girlfriend of the 20-year-old man killed during the carjacking, and 19-year-old Randy Dean Goodrick will be arraigned Thursday in District Judge Michael Douglas' courtroom on a variety of charges that include murder and conspiracy.

Aghas, 18, an entertainer at an area topless club, and Goodrick are being held without bail.

The indictment alleges the defendants and Jeremy Butler were cruising the affluent areas in the far western area of the valley on Aug. 13 in search of someone to rob when they came across a man in a BMW.

They followed the man to a home in a gated community and confronted him with a shotgun, the indictment states. Aghas is charged as the driver of the trio's car during the search for a victim.

The robbery victim snatched the shotgun away from his attackers and as they punched him, he fired multiple shots, hitting both bandits. He may have avoided being kidnapped or killed, the indictment alleges, but the two attackers got away with his car.

Minutes later Butler was killed when the stolen BMW raced through a red light at the intersection of Charleston Boulevard and Hualapai Way and hit a motorcycle driven by Phillip D. Gastineau before hitting a light pole.

Gastineau, 41, a credit union loan officer, and Butler, who was unemployed, died at the scene.

Goodrick was injured in the crash.
