Letter: Politicians should own up to mistakes

Sunday, Sept. 5, 1999 | 10:25 a.m.

That current theme is being used by Texas Gov. George W. Bush and has previously been used by Reps. Henry Hyde, Dan Burton, Bob Barr, Newt Gingrich, et al. to sweep under the rug their blatant misconduct.

I thought we were all taught that when we become adults, we have to act like adults. Why do politicians feel they can get a "free pass" by attributing their misconduct to "youthful indiscretions."

It is interesting to note that a member of the Symbionese Liberation Army is now being tried in Los Angeles for a crime committed 25 years ago. Since then she has led an exemplary life in Minnesota as a responsible member of her community. She is not being allowed to plead, as some of our politicians do, that this was "youthful indiscretion."

When are we going to start holding politicians to the same standards that the rest of us are being judged?
