Letter: Illegal immigrants strain resources

Sunday, Sept. 5, 1999 | 10:23 a.m.

Too often accusations of racism and xenophobia are hurled at those who would challenge the benefits of illegal immigration.

I've been a board member in a school district which was hit by an influx of illegals. More portables were added, more teachers and bilingual aides were hired, the dropout rate escalated and test scores plummeted.

Our resources were stretched to the breaking point, but the property-tax-based income remained the same.

It's much the same in the Clark County and Washoe County school districts. I am sick and tired of picking up the tab with property-tax increases. If the feds are either unwilling or unable to control our borders, they should pay us for their failure.
