UNLV runners open season

Thursday, Sept. 2, 1999 | 10:32 a.m.

The UNLV cross country team will open its season Saturday at the Jammin' Invitational at Carbon Canyon Park in Brea, Calif.

The Rebels finished fourth in the Jammin' Invitational last year, with senior Angie Fortner capturing the women's individual title.

While UNLV lost Fortner to graduation, the Rebels return four seniors and two juniors from last year's squad, which finished seventh at the Western Athletic Conference Championships.

"This weekend, we will be testing our fitness level," UNLV distance coach Mary Shea said. "We'll see what kind of summer training everybody has done and get them to a more acceptable level once we assess their level of fitness."

* The UNLV women's soccer team kicked off its season Wednesday night with a 3-0 victory over Weber State at Peter Johann Memorial Field. Breanna Seaton, Anita Pedford and Cosette Joffs scored for the Rebels. Bishop Gorman grad Shannon Wilson was the winning goalie. The UNLV men's soccer team opened its season with a 3-1 loss at San Diego. B.J. McNicol scored the only Rebel goal.

* The UNLV golf team is No. 2 in the preseason MasterCard Collegiate Golf Rankings. The Rebels' Michael Kirk is seventh in the individual rankings. See list on scoreboard, page 6D.
