It's a privilege to observe Nevada's justice system, close-up and live -- warts and all. This public service is very much appreciated.

Our tenure in the working force necessitated establishing residence in many states. In none of those states did the mandate of a justice of the peace involve authority to act in cases other than minor offenses, administering oaths or performing marriages.

To our surprise, such an officer of the court is presiding over a preliminary trial -- one which is not only a high-profile murder case, but one which could result in a death sentence for one or both defendants.

It would be instructive to know the experience and qualifications of the judge and the two district attorneys. If and when the case goes to district court, it's sure to capture national attention, where any errors in law, procedure, etc. will be featured.

As a resident and tax-paying contributor to this city's economy, I am very interested in equal justice for all -- both the state and the defendants.
