Editorial: Housing budget cuts could hurt homeless
Wednesday, Sept. 1, 1999 | 8:52 a.m.
The United States has a robust economy, as exceptionally high employment and low inflation combines to create a surge of prosperity. But not all Americans have shared in these good times, with some cities, rural areas and Indian reservations experiencing high rates of unemployment. Even the high-flying economy of Las Vegas has its share of problems, including a sizable homeless population.
Despite a huge federal government budget surplus, it appears Congress could significantly cut the Department of Housing and Urban Development's budget, which HUD officials say could reduce dramatically the aid that nonprofit groups receive to provide assistance to the homeless. In Las Vegas that could mean a reduction of $2.2 million, which in turn could result in MASH Village and the Shade Tree Shelter providing 202 fewer housing units for low-income families. Others that receive HUD funds are Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada, the Women's Development Center and the Salvation Army. The House should reject the Appropriations Committee's reductions and restore the funding for this agency that plays an important role in helping get people off the streets and into affordable housing.
