Amendment suggested to expand rural representation

Wednesday, Sept. 1, 1999 | 3:16 a.m.

Rhoads, R-Tuscarora, said he and fellow Republican Mike McGinness of Fallon are the only senators from rural Nevada. Thirteen are from Clark County and six are from the Reno-Lake Tahoe-Carson City area.

He told the legislative committee of the Elko Chamber of Commerce that amending the state constitution to increase the number of senators from 21 to 25 would help ensure representation of rural Nevada after reapportionment in 2001.

Rhoads said his rural district could be redrawn to include Sparks.

He said some legislators, such as Senate Minority Floor Leader Dina Titus, D-Las Vegas, have commented that rural Nevada already has too much power.
