Washoe County prosecutor arrested for resisting arrest

Thursday, Oct. 28, 1999 | 10:06 a.m.

The Nevada Highway Patrol issued an arrest warrant today for chief deputy district attorney David Stanton.

Stanton was doing 67 in a 25 mile-per hour zone Wednesday and then struggled with a patrolman who stopped him, NHP Col. Michael Hood said.

"A small scuffle ensued," Hood said.

Three Washoe County sheriff's deputies on their way to training in Gardnerville stopped to assist, Hood said. They eventually handcuffed Stanton but then released him without a citation, he said.

"One of our deputies grabbed his left hand. And as he did so, the subject stated, 'I'm with the DA's office," Assistant Washoe Sheriff Jim Lopey said. "He told him to stop resisting and they handcuffed him."

Stanton, 39, says he will cooperate. But he said the allegation he was going 67 miles per hour was "ridiculous."

He said he doesn't understand why the highway patrol has decided to press charges now when the trooper decided against writing a ticket at the time he was stopped.

Stanton has been involved with a number of high-profile trials, including the recent prosecution of a man convicted of the hatchet slaying of a University of Nevada police officer.

Washoe County District Attorney Richard Gammick said Stanton was one his way to teach a class at the Nevada Highway Patrol academy when he was stopped.

"He obviously has a personal problem to deal with," Gammick said.
