When deciding which university to attend next fall, Brandon Askew had to choose between his heart and his pocketbook.
He went with his instincts and followed his heart.
Askew, a senior at Fargo South High School in North Dakota, has made a verbal commitment to UNLV men's golf coach Dwaine Knight.
"I think that coach Knight is just fantastic and I really liked the guys on the team," Askew said. "My ultimate goal is to make the PGA Tour and I feel coach Knight has all the tools to get you there.
"I felt he was gonna be the best resource to me of any coach."
Askew was offered partial scholarships to Arizona State, Arizona and Northwestern.
He decided to walk on at UNLV in hopes of procuring some scholarship money after his first year.
"I decided what was best for my golf game, that was the biggest thing," Askew said of turning down the other offers. "Me and my parents tried to take money out of the equation and decide which school I'd be happy at. Money is great and it's flattering to receive scholarship offers, but it was not a big factor."
