It's official.
The Mountain West Conference issued a release on Tuesday confirming that UNLV men's basketball coach Bill Bayno will be suspended for the team's first MWC game on Jan. 10 against Brigham Young.
Last Thursday, Bayno missed the mandatory head coaches meeting held in conjunction with media day at the Four Seasons hotel.
Regulation 1.11.1 states that the penalty for missing the meeting is a one-game suspension to be served during the first conference game.
After review, the Joint Council Executive Committee of the MWC voted to support MWC Commissioner Craig Thompson's decision to suspend Bayno.
"I expected it," Bayno said. "Despite contradictory information and poor communication from the conference office, it was my fault that I wasn't there.
"I preach being on time to my players and ignorance is not an excuse. I accept the punishment."
The coaches' meeting started at 7:15 a.m. and Bayno arrived at 9, 50 minutes before he was scheduled to address reporters.
Bayno said last Thursday that he was unaware there was a penalty for missing the meeting.
