Mother of truant student gets suspended jail sentence

Nancy Winn, 42, pleaded guilty Monday in Carson City Justice Court to a misdemeanor charge that could have netted her up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.
Her 11-year-old daughter was held back last school year after she missed 59 days of classes. Any further unexcused absences will send the mother to jail.
School officials say they made several attempts to work with Winn before they resorted to the 1967 truancy law.
Deputy District Attorney Jason Woodbury said the child is capable of getting A's and B's in school.
Winn said her daughter had a recurring problem with head lice and that other students made fun of her. "I don't think I was being neglectful," she said. "I was being overprotective." Her daughter has missed no school so far this year.
