Ken Ward Lam, 34, of Chino, was booked late Friday into the Douglas County Jail for investigation of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon.
A vehicle driven by Lam and another vehicle occupied by three people from the Topaz Lake area were traveling on U.S. Highway 395 south of here when the shooting occurred Friday night.
No one was injured after the slug from the .45-caliber pistol passed through a front fender of the other vehicle, deputies said.
"This appears to be some sort of road rage incident that followed minor traffic stuff," said sheriff's investigator Keith Logan.
