Highway patrol officers pull 48 tour buses off Interstate 15

Highway patrol officers in Nevada and California stopped more than 100 tour buses over the weekend, issuing dozens of citations and delaying tourists who had to wait for replacement buses to continue their journeys -- mostly to-and-from Las Vegas.
Nevada Highway Patrol spokesman Scott Flabi said the program to get unsafe buses off the highway is part of a federally funded project and is a joint effort between Nevada and California.
Bus checkpoints were operated on Interstate 15 in Jean from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Buses were checked to see if they met safety codes.
Flabi said 116 buses were stopped and 78 citations issued. He said troopers found 564 violations.
He said 48 buses were taken out of service and the companies had to replace them. Twelve drivers were not allowed to continue their routes.
A similar operation was conducted last year, Flabi said.
