DMV says refunds due anyone who paid for unneeded smog tests on new cars

Monday, Oct. 25, 1999 | 5:54 a.m.

The agency said 130 drivers have been notified so far that they may have had to get a smog test in error for 1998-, 1999- and 2000-model cars.

Those motorists and anyone else who thinks a smog test for such vehicles was unnecessary should bring receipts to smog-test stations in Washoe and Clark counties and ask for refunds, the DMV said.

If no refund is given, drivers can contact the DMV which could take action against a smog station.

The DMV says a minor software problem in the agency's new Genesis computer system in September resulted in notices on registration renewals improperly requiring some smog tests. The problem has since been corrected.

Nevada law requires smog tests on vehicles manufactured after 1967 and on new models starting with their third registration.

The glitch is one of numerous problems with the $35 million DMV computer system that went on line Sept. 7. The computer errors led to lengthy waits before a motorist could get to a DMV clerk's window.
