Letter: Momentum builds to escape U.N.
Sunday, Oct. 24, 1999 | 10:23 a.m.
Where 54 votes favored the U.S. withdrawal from the United Nations in 1997, there were 74 votes favoring this latest effort. The awareness in Congress of the threat posed to our nation by the United Nations is growing. It is also significant that the House, acting on its own, without the support either of the Senate or the president, could effectively end U.S. participation in the United Nations by simply cutting off the funding, just as Paul recently tried to do. This is because of the Constitution's Article II, Section 7: "All bills for raising revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives ..."
Time is running out for the United States to break away from the United Nation's tightening grip. That more members of the House see the danger is encouraging. That presidential candidate Sen. Bob Smith, I-N.H., has made withdrawal from the United Nations a major plank in his campaign is additionally encouraging. But greater awareness and involvement are needed.
Only a rising tide of citizen revulsion against the "House that Alger Hiss Built" will assure that Congress will do what is necessary to preserve our personal freedom and national sovereignty.
