Letter: WCHL isn’t a goon league
Friday, Oct. 22, 1999 | 9:44 a.m.
Regarding Ron Kantowski's comments about the "brawling" West Coast Hockey League (Tuesday notes, Oct. 12): Does he do any research or does he just print whatever comes to mind?
The WCHL is less penalty-ridden than almost any of the AA or AAA leagues and last year's WCHL Taylor Cup Champion Tacoma Sabercats -- on a penalty minute per game basis -- was among the least penalized of any professional team in North America. You don't have to play goon hockey to play winning hockey, regardless of what hacks like you write.
(Editor's note: During its research of the WCHL, the Sun learned that Anchorage defenseman Dean Trboyevich was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon after violently crosschecking Fresno's Jacques Mailhot during a game last season.)
It's no surprise the Thunder folded if you are representative of the coverage they got.
