Letter: Unions protect our jobs, dignity
Friday, Oct. 22, 1999 | 9:42 a.m.
In response to the Oct. 3 letter regarding free enterprise and Wal-Mart from Elizabeth Perkins, she went on to say, "In the near future, everyone's job will be jeopardized and replaced with a computer and a robot running that computer."
Do you remember when the DMV went to new computer programs and how that affected the people around us and the long lines they had to encounter? Robots are computers and to have computers running computers, well let's just say, it would be a "death wish." If it does come to that, which in my opinion, I don't think it will, it would probably go into the year 3000 and thereafter. In order to get all the so-called "bugs" out and to have it working properly, there would always be some sort of glitch and the person constructing this program or computer will always point the finger at someone else.
Does this sound familiar? Do you remember the lynch mobs from years back? They were groups of people that went out, on their own, without the help of any law enforcement or political figures, because justice was never served, so they made their own justice. Well if robots are going to become a thing of the future and take away these jobs, I think the lynch mobs will come back and we will have a World War III.
This is why we have unions, to protect our jobs, salaries, benefits and our dignity. Don't you see, I am proud to be in the union.
