Letter: And another man’s view on IRL story

Friday, Oct. 22, 1999 | 9:42 a.m.

Regarding your story on the IRL Texas race: The fantasies Eddie Gossage dreams up for his numbers are always entertaining, but ... do you really think you saw a butt in one out of every four seats?

Did you find it ironic that the reported IRL attendance almost exactly compares to the number of season tickets sold for each of the three years of operations at TMS? There were 50,000 in 1999; 65,000 in 1998; and 80,000 in 1997. I know that I was counted in the '97 IRL attendance report and my unused ticket, still stashed in a drawer somewhere, was not even attractive as a free gift.

If you wanted an indicator of how (small) the demand for IRL tickets really was, all you had to do was watch the dearth of business at the very limited number of ticket windows that were open.

I am a hardcore racing fan and I do enjoy the various series, but I also expect some honesty within the sport.
