Man indicted in slashing of two boys

Thursday, Oct. 21, 1999 | 10:02 a.m.

A twice-convicted felon from Washington, who came to Las Vegas to live with his cousin, is accused of slashing the throats of two boys living in the house.

In an indictment returned Wednesday by a Clark County grand jury, Jaramie Dean Womack is charged with attacking the boys before locking them in a bathroom with their sister. The cuts from a steak knife, however, were not deep enough to be life threatening, although prosecutors say the scars from the wounds are evident on the boys, who are 7 and 13 years old.

The 12-year-old girl was not injured and escaped from the bathroom to get help for her brothers, prosecutors said.

The indictment also alleges that Womack ransacked the home on Oct. 4 and stole two checks that belonged to the children's mother, who is the girlfriend of Womack's cousin.

The children were left alone with Womack at the time of the incident.

Womack will be arraigned Oct. 27 in District Judge John McGroarty's courtroom. Bail was set at $500,000 by Chief District Judge Lee Gates.

In asking for the high bail, Deputy District Attorney Valerie Adair noted that Womack had been convicted of two felony charges in Washington, including a robbery count.

The indictment charges him with attempted murder, kidnapping, robbery, burglary and forgery.

The forgery count alleges that the day after the children were slashed, Womack forged and then cashed a $567 check written on the account of Outdoor BBQ Island Co.
