Henderson orchestra plans free concert

The Henderson Civic Symphony will perform at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Valley View Recreation Center, 500 Harris St., Henderson.

The free performance is sponsored by the Henderson Parks and Recreation Department. Call 565-2367.

Seniors event to help center's meal programs

The Henderson Senior's Auxiliary will sponsor its annual Oktoberfest 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday at the Henderson Senior Center, 27 E. Texas St. Admission is free.

The event will feature handcrafted items and homemade baked goods. All proceeds will benefit meal programs at the center and for home-bound seniors. Call 565-6990.

Summerlin Hospital will host Monday event

Summerlin Hospital is holding a cancer awareness health fair 6-8:30 p.m. Monday at 653 Town Center Drive to inform Las Vegans about the latest advancements in diagnosing, treating and preventing cancer.

The Cancer Institute of Nevada at the hospital is presenting the fair, which will feature information booths, physician speakers, $10 flu shots, free skin cancer screenings, hospital tours and refreshments. Call 233-7540.

Henderson recreation centers offer trip

The Henderson Parks and Recreation Department will sponsor an all-day excursion to Disneyland on Saturday.

Passengers will depart at 3 a.m. from the Valley View Recreation Center, 500 Harris St., and 3:30 a.m. from the Silver Springs Recreation Center, 1951 Silver Springs Parkway. Buses depart Disneyland at 8 p.m. for the return trip home.

The trip costs $65 per person, which includes round-trip transportation and unlimited use of all park attractions. Advanced registration is recommended. Call 565-2121.

Equipment swap planned this weekend

The Lee Canyon Ski Patrol will hold its annual Ski Swap 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday through Sunday at the McGhie's Ski Store, 4503 W. Sahara Ave.

Bring used clothing, ski equipment, snowboard equipment and other articles and register them for sale.

The Ski Patrol collects a registration charge of 50 cents per item and will keep 15 percent of the sale price as a fund-raiser to provide medical rescue supplies and equipment for its operation. Call Randy at 252-8077.

Jewelers looking for a vintage ring

M.J. Christensen Jewelers is celebrating its 60th anniversary and to mark the occasion the company is looking for the oldest diamond ring sold by the store.

Entries must provide some proof of purchase.

The owner of the oldest ring will receive a premier one-carat diamond. Owners of the next six oldest rings will receive strands of freshwater pearls.

Entry rules may be picked up at any of M.J. Christensen's four stores: Caesars Forum Shops, Meadows mall, Galleria at Sunset or its main store at 856 E. Sahara Ave.

Death and dying talk

Elizabeth Kubler-Ross, an expert on death and dying considered by many to be the founder of the hospice movement, will speak at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the Artemus W. Ham Hall at UNLV. Call April Reckling at 895-1970.

Equine Carnival

The All-Breed Equine Carnival will be held 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at Horseman's Park, 5800 E. Flamingo Road. Admission is free. For further information, call 396-4202.
