Letter: Slowing drivers would save lives
Monday, Oct. 18, 1999 | 9:27 a.m.
Example: Most bus stops are in the middle of the block. Why not put a marked crosswalk there or maybe put the bus stop on the corners? Then the pedestrian could use the crosswalk available. Of course this is all a dream because you can't do anything to slow up the cars. That's unthinkable.
I'll show you what I mean. A baby sitter shook a baby so hard the infant died. The baby sitter got 25 years in prison. Some person stops at a bar and has a few beers and on the way he has a crash, killing two people. He gets a little bracelet to wear on his wrist because he was a bad boy; best of all no one will see it.
A person is found shot to death; this gets front page publicity. Someone is found in the street dead -- "hit and run" -- and this gets on the third page or somewhere in the back.
What I'm trying to show is the automobile or car is king. Sooner or later someone is going to wake up and realize "speed kills."
