Reno beats Vegas in starting accounting pay

Friday, Oct. 15, 1999 | 11:33 a.m.

A survey of Nevada's accounting industry found entry level accountants in Reno received higher wages than their counterparts in Las Vegas.

In their "1999 Compensation and Benefits Survey of Nevada Public Accounting Firms," University of Nevada, Reno, accounting professors Jeanne Yamamura and Jannet Vreeland found that small accounting firms pay an average starting salary of $28,000 in Reno, compared to $25,000 in Las Vegas.

The report also found that fewer public accounting firms are paying overtime, and more companies are awarding performance bonuses.

The report also states that 67 percent of small- and medium-sized accounting firms offered performance bonuses and alternative work schedules. Approximately 83 percent of large firms offered employees those same benefits.

The report surveyed 39 accounting companies, including 24 Southern Nevada and 15 Northern Nevada firms.
