16-year-old girl, waiting for bus, is attacked

Clark County School District police are investigating the beating and possible rape of a 16-year-old girl on the grounds of Orr Middle School Thursday morning.
District spokeswoman Mary Stanley-Larsen confirmed that the girl was assaulted sometime after 6 a.m. as she waited for a school bus near the middle school at 1562 Katie Ave.
It was unclear this morning whether the girl, who was severely beaten, also was sexually assaulted.
Stanley-Larsen said the girl's injuries were not life-threatening.
She said the victim was waiting for a bus that would take her to the Southern Nevada Vo-Tech Center.
School police spokesman Sgt. Ken Young said investigators are awaiting test results to determine if the girl was raped.
He said the girl was beaten unconscious so he could not say for certain whether she had been sexually assaulted. "But there is a strong possibility," he said.
Young described the suspect as a black male in his early 20s with dark eyes and possibly a short Afro-style haircut.
He said the man was wearing a dark flannel shirt and dark pants and may have had a handgun in his waistband.
Young asked anyone with information about the incident to call the police tip line at 799-0228.
