Thursday, Oct. 14, 1999 | 11:08 a.m.
The eighth annual Living History programs will begin this fall at Spring Mountain Ranch State Park.
A series of talks and demonstrations will be presented on the pioneer settlement of Southern Nevada as it relates to the history of the ranch, spanning from the early 1800s to the turn of the century.
Demonstration programs are also offered, showing oldtime skills and artisan crafts. Call 687-4370. Among the programs are:
Helen Stewart: This program will begin at noon and will repeat at 2 p.m. One of the first pioneers to settle in the Las Vegas valley, Helen Stewart owned and operated an 1800-acre cattle ranch and farm. Stewart, called the "First Lady of Las Vegas," was the first postmaster and woman juror, and a charter member of the Mesquite Club. This program is done in a first person presentation, in period costume.
Willard George: Beginning at noon and repeating at 2 p.m., this program demonstrates Willard George growing up in the Las Vegas area playing with the Wilson boys and other Paiute children, who taught him taxidermy. He later became a famous 'furrier to the stars' and a leader in the chinchilla industry.
