Letter: What’s up with all this nonsense at City Hall?

Thursday, Oct. 14, 1999 | 9:26 a.m.

It is obvious beyond question that McDonald wanted to break up Metro. On "Nevada Week in Review" he looked embarrassed for being there and was virtually noncommittal on every question asked him. All he had to say was that he and Sheriff Keller had talked. The mayor kept referring to "a piece of paper."

He couldn't believe the county people thought they should be aware the city was conducting a study of their cost of Metro. Why all the attempted secrecy? The county is involved, why shouldn't they be advised?

Were the Mayor and McDonald and one other crony going to vote to withdraw from Metro and then tell the county and voters?

When we have one of the best police forces in the country, why would two inexperienced politicians want to break it up without getting input from all concerned, including the voters? Could it be because they can't control it?

If they are so anxious to save money, why duplicate agencies by expanding the Marshals Force by several million dollars?

Why would McDonald go on "Nevada Week in Review" and ignore Mitch Fox's questions? Is he afraid to level with the voters? And why would any councilman, particularly a novice, show such arrogance as to not speak to the elected head of Metro for a year? Is that the way all city business is conducted?

It seems that too many elected officials immediately forget why they were elected. I hope those mentioned above have an accurate memory.
