Ex-building inspector faces charges

Just a week before his scheduled corruption trial, former Clark County building inspector Marcus McAnally won a delay Monday until next year.

District Judge John McGroarty reset the trial on Feb. 21. McAnally is charged with 13 felony counts of falsifying inspection records to show that construction projects by a friend's company had been approved.

The projects that were the subject of the criminal probe involved remodeling and renovations at Strip resorts and one at his father's house, all between Jan. 7, 1994, and April 9, 1997.

McAnally, a 45-year-old former Metro Police officer, will remain free without bail until the trial.

Postponement made in Hanlon case

The murder trial of Scott Bedard in the execution style slaying of 33-year-old Bill Hanlon Jr., the son of state Board of Education member Bill Hanlon Sr., has been delayed until April 3.

The trial had been scheduled for Nov. 29, but District Judge Jeff Sobel on Monday granted a request by defense attorneys for the postponement.

Metro Police believe Hanlon had interrupted a burglary inside an office building in southwest Las Vegas early one morning in August 1997. Hanlon was shot in the head, and investigators said there didn't appear to have been a struggle.

Bedard could face the death penalty if he is convicted of first-degree murder.

Gunmen hold up armored car

Police are looking for two men in connection with the robbery of a Brinks armored car at 9:10 a.m. on Monday outside the Mandalay Bay hotel-casino.

The men robbed the Brinks security guards outside the resort, took their weapons and cash and checks from the truck, Metro Police Lt. John Alamshaw said.

The amount stolen was not disclosed, but all of the cash was in $50 bills, Alamshaw said.

Woman placed on probation

District Judge Mark Gibbons on Monday placed Marsha K. Bosworth, 43, on one-year probation after she pleaded guilty to a gross misdemeanor charge of elder neglect.

Bosworth must attend anger management classes and perform community service. She is prohibited from any future employment as a care provider for the elderly.

The charge stems from an incident in May 1998, Tim Terry, director of the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit in the state attorney general's office, said. Bosworth struck a 92-year-old female resident of a Las Vegas nursing home in an effort to get the woman to leave the dining room, he said.

Terry said since the incident Bosworth has surrendered her nurse assistant certificate to the state Board of Nursing.

Bosworth in March was charged with felony abuse of an older person, but it was reduced to a gross misdemeanor during plea negotiations.

DMV clarifies who gets a reprieve

Representatives of the Department of Motor Vehicles and Public Safety say the 30-day grace period mentioned during a recent announcement by Gov. Kenny Guinn applies only to customers who have submitted registration renewals and are awaiting their vehicle tags.

Renewals that were mailed in, placed in a DMV drop box at a field office or provided to a DMV supervisor at a field office qualify for the grace period.

Customers with an expired registration renewal who have not done anything about it and customers who have recently received their renewal notice do not qualify for the grace period, the DMV stated.

Driver's license renewals, new registrations or motorists with an expired registration traveling out of state also do not qualify.

The DMV reports that penalties and late fees will be enforced for negligence.

Firefighter hurt when he falls off roof

A Henderson firefighter was injured Monday night when he fell off the roof of a burning house.

The firefighter, whose name was withheld, was putting a ventilation hole in the roof of the house at 856 Bergemont St. while fighting an electrical fire that started in an upstairs bedroom.

He stepped off the edge of the roof and fell 10 feet to a garage roof and then rolled to the ground, acting Battalion Chief Craig Walls said.

The firefighter was transported to University Medical Center where he was treated for a broken wrist and released.

Walls said the fire was contained in the bedroom where it started and put out within 15 minutes. Firefighters estimated the damage at $25,000.

A Henderson man who died Sunday in a hit-and-run accident has been identified as David Thompson, 39, according to the Clark County coroner's office. Thompson was walking about 8:30 p.m. Sunday along Sunset Road near Burns Road when he was hit by a car and killed.

The coroner's office has identified a 17-year-old Las Vegas boy who was stabbed to death on Sunday as Levi Leavitt. Metro Police detectives believe Leavitt was killed during a fight with another teen with whom he had an ongoing dispute.
