Monthly event set at West LV Arts Center
Poetry takes the stage at 7 p.m. Friday for the monthly Poets' Corner at the West Las Vegas Arts Center, 947 W. Lake Mead Blvd.
The program, presented by the Cultural and Community Affairs Division of the Las Vegas Department of Leisures Services, is held throughout the year on the third Friday of each month and features both established poets and other participants. Admission if free. Call 229-4800.
Red Rock Canyon cleanup scheduled
Volunteers are needed to roll up their sleeves and help clean up Red Rock Canyon later this month during the Bureau of Land Management's annual Red Rock Days celebration.
Workers will pick up trash, pull nonnative plants, maintain legal trails and help eradicate illegal ones.
The event is Oct. 22 and 23, beginning at 7 a.m. each day. A free picnic for volunteers will be provided at 2 p.m. Oct. 23. Volunteers should wear appropriate work attire, boots and a hat and also bring water and a snack. The BLM will provide tools and supplies.
Volunteers must sign up before the event. Those younger than 18 need a signed parental permission slip. For registration call Ranger Jim Cribbs, 363-1921.
Event planned for children's hospital
OOH's and AH's Collectibles will host the third annual dinner and auction at 6 p.m. Saturday at Arizona Charlie's to benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Tickets to the dinner event are $35.
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is the largest childhood cancer research center in the United States. Founded in 1962 by the late entertainer Danny Thomas, the hospital researches and treats thousands of children with cancer, pediatric AIDS and other catastrophic illnesses each year.

UMC will host free block party
University Medical Center's annual Celebration of Children, a free block party especially for kids will be from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at UMC, 1800 W. Charleston Blvd.
The event promises to entertain as well as educate children to living healthy and happy lives. There will be free food for kids, face painting, prizes, free immunizations, music and much more. Call 383-2090.
Social Justice in the Jewish Tradition, a workshop and discussion led by Reform Rabbi Richard Marx, a veteran of the civil rights movement, and Evely Laser-Shlensky, executive board member of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, will be held 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the Clark County Government Center, Pueblo Room.
The Sunrise Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit will celebrate its 25th anniversary 1-3 p.m. Saturday under a circus tent in the northeast parking lot of Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, 3186 S. Maryland Parkway. Call 731-8018.
Six teachers given grants for studies
Six Henderson and Boulder City teachers received Reserve Distinguished Teacher Fellowships totaling $15,000.
The $3,000 fellowships, sponsored by the Reserve hotel-casino and the Clark County Public Education Foundation, were awarded Sept. 28.
The foundation established the program to enable outstanding educators pursue professional development opportunities.
Recipients included Angela Richman of Andrew Mitchell Elementary School, Maria Sassani of Sue Morrow Elementary School, Barbara Walsh of Jim Thorpe Elementary School, Esther Weinstein of Gordon McCaw Elementary School and Kimberly Adams and Connie Malin of Estes McDoniel Elementary School.
Immunizations
Health District immunization clinics are open each week in Southern Nevada. Immunizations are provided without charge to children and young adults under the age of 21 in any of four public health centers and 36 satellite clinics. The following clinincs will be open this week, Wednesday through Oct. 19.
