Editorial: Consider all options to stop DMV glitches

Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999 | 9:21 a.m.

Gov. Kenny Guinn made the right decision Wednesday, giving a 30-day grace period for motorists who don't receive their vehicle registration renewals on time because of glitches in a new DMV computer system. The computer bugs have delayed DMV transactions, causing long lines and frayed tempers at DMV offices, where it's not uncommon for people to wait all day for service that previously may have taken a half-hour or less to complete.

Guinn should take seriously a suggestion made by Assemblyman Bob Beers, R-Las Vegas, chairman of a legislative committee with oversight of the DMV project. Beers, a computer consultant, believes that the new program should be shut down temporarily while the bugs are eliminated. In the meantime, the old system that ran smoothly would be brought back online. The DMV has rejected Beers' plan, but if it can be done without jeopardizing the new system's eventual success, the governor should do so, ending the unconscionably long lines at DMV.
