Resort sues Greyhound over crime problems

Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999 | 11:37 a.m.

The Plaza hotel-casino filed a lawsuit against Greyhound Lines, claiming it has taken few steps to curb the "flourishing" criminal activity that has accompanied the derelicts and homeless people who use the Greyhound depot as a shelter in downtown Las Vegas.

The lawsuit, filed Monday through attorney Mitch Cobeaga, contends the problems related to the depot in the resort at Fremont and Main streets have cost the Plaza more than $500,000 in lost profits and "irreparably injured its business reputation."

A temporary restraining order is being sought from District Judge Gene Porter that would force Greyhound to provide better security. The lawsuit also seeks unspecified compensatory and punitive damages.

Greyhound, according to the legal action, has been at its present location since 1970 and its 30-year lease is scheduled to expire next year, although the company has the option to renew it for two more 10-year terms.

The lawsuit claims Greyhound has breached the lease currently in effect. Greyhound declined to comment.
