Hospital lays off 11 from business office

Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999 | 11:25 a.m.

HENDERSON -- St. Rose Dominican Hospital said 11 employees lost their jobs when it closed its "management service organization."

The organization, Nevada Physicians' Choice, employed 17 people. Some of the employees who were not laid off will be absorbed elsewhere in the hospital, a spokeswoman said.

St. Rose said Nevada Physicians' Choice was established in 1998 to negotiate commercial and Medicare risk contracts for the hospital's independent physicians' association.

But Humana Health Plan dropped risk-based products in Southern Nevada and St. Rose was unable to reach an agreement with PacifiCare for the doctors.

A spokeswoman said the doctors will continue to seek managed care contracts.

"We have no alternative but to discontinue operations of our MSO until the market proves ready for this type of relationship," hospital Chief Executive Rod Davis said in a statement.
