Lyon County sheriff's deputies also said the apartment that Ethel Booton shared with her son had been burglarized.
Michael Booton told investigators that he found his mother dead in her bed after he returned home from work. She was killed Thursday night.
Investigators said they have a suspect, but haven't made an arrest.
