Wells police chief resigns
Monday, Oct. 4, 1999 | 2:43 a.m.
City Manager Jolene Supp said Murray left his letter of resignation on her desk Sept. 23, effective the same day.
"I asked him if there were any reasons," Supp said. "He responded there were private as well as professional reasons but he didn't want to discuss them."
In his letter, Murray said, "I am formally resigning my position as chief of police of Wells. I am working with Sgt. (Joe) Gardner to get him up to speed on the paper work. I would like to leave this position Sept. 23, 1999. I will have all the officers up to date on the training for the year."
Murray was sworn in on Jan. 12 to replace Jim Hertz, 61, who retired.
He moved to Nevada from California in 1964 and worked for sheriff's departments in Nye and Esmeralda counties.
He became the Esmeralda County sheriff in 1979. He was an Elko County Sheriff's deputy in Wendover from 1988 to 1991, when county commissioners hired him as Wendover's first police chief.
He was also a police officer in Wells from 1993 to 1995.
