UNLV's Katarina Malec needed three sets to down teammate Veronica Goude for the championship of the 1999 Women's Tennis Fall Invitational Sunday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex. Malec, a senior, won 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 in the top flight to run her record to 10-1 this fall. The former junior-college transfer already has more victories than all of last year after battling injuries in the spring.
UNLV also got a win in the second flight of doubles play where Goude teamed with Britta Gabl to down Sylvana Navarro and Kathy Kmiec of Northern Arizona, 8-5.
In the first flight, Malec and Marianne Bakken rebounded from a first-round loss to win the consolation bracket, 8-1, over Michelle Mohr and Kim Bruno of NAU. Tammy Wang of Minnesota won the second flight singles title while Amy Thomas took the third flight crown. Also, Golden Gophers Nora Sauska and Kim Simonsen teamed to win the top flight of doubles.
