Pharmacist shortage predicted

Monday, Oct. 4, 1999 | 9:21 a.m.

Keith MacDonald, executive director of the Nevada Board of Pharmacy, blamed the shortage on the state's rapid population growth, aging baby boomers and an increase in new drugs on the market.

He also attributed it to the lack of a state pharmacy school, saying many students can't afford to go out of state to obtain a pharmacy degree.

"We could probably educate about 90 (students) per year and successfully employ them based on how the state is growing," MacDonald said.

Pharmacy schools in Las Vegas and Reno are being considered but are only in preliminary stages of evaluation.

A total of 1,423 pharmacists are licensed in Nevada, and officials estimate an increase of only 7 percent to 8 percent in their numbers this year.
