No immediate layoffs at Henderson plant

Monday, Oct. 4, 1999 | 11:59 a.m.

The president of Titanium Metals Corp. said today that no layoffs are immediately pending at the company's Henderson plant, though he wouldn't rule out the possibility in the long term.

"That is pure speculation and rumor," said Andrew Dixey, in response to rumors that layoffs would be announced today. "No decisions have been made whatsoever, and we will make decisions when we have all the facts and figures in front of us."

TIMET announced Friday that it was considering layoffs because of a soft market in the aerospace industry, as well as production problems at its North American plants. The Denver company expects to take a third-quarter loss of 25 cents per share.

The TIMET plant in Henderson now employs about 300 people, and has laid off about 60 over the past year, Steelworkers Union officials say. The union had expected an announcement regarding layoffs today.
