Letter: Nevada senators showed leadership on timber issues

Monday, Oct. 4, 1999 | 9:26 a.m.

The Bryan amendment would have cut $33 million in timber and road subsidies that the Senate added to the Forest Service's budget request. About $20 million of those funds would have been redirected to meet underfunded national forest restoration projects such as road maintenance, watershed restoration and fish and wildlife programs. The remaining $13 million would have gone toward deficit reduction. This amendment was strongly supported by both taxpayer and conservation groups who have long been supporters of trimming waste within the Forest Service.

Thank you, Sens. Bryan and Reid, for your leadership in protecting the taxpayers and our national forests.
