Letter: City building poorly maintained

Monday, Oct. 4, 1999 | 9:26 a.m.

You walk up the steps and hesitate to grab the bright brass railing. The sun glistens off the fresh buffing but when you look at the steps below it appears that flocks of pigeons roosted there overnight. A closer look and you find buffing compound stuck in every crevice of the railings. Indeed, that's what's spattered on the steps, not the suspected bird doo-doo. And when this condition continues for months and months, one has to wonder why nobody in charge never seems to see the sloppy work, or even cares. Maybe they only use the back entrance.

Imagine sending our kids to school with a clean face, except for dried soap smeared all over it. Or go through the car wash and pick up your car before the people with the wet towels tidy it up for you. Or think of using your polished special occasion silver looking like those railings.

But then, we're not government, are we? We have pride in our work and person.
