Harolds Club mural donated to city

Harrah's Entertainment bought the old casino on Virginia Street and is having the building demolished. But Harrah's announced last week it's giving the giant mural to the city of Reno for safe keeping.

"The Harolds Club name is world famous and the mural is certainly a piece of Reno's history that we feel should not be forgotten," said Steve Yarrow, senior vice president and general manager at Harrah's Reno.

The 30-by-80 foot mural depicts the settling of the American West. It was unveiled in 1946 when Harolds Club was a Nevada gaming landmark.

The city will take possession of the approximately 200 mural panels and store them until a new display area can be determined. The mural was actually removed from Harolds facade in parts a few weeks ago.

"We are pleased that Harrah's shares our commitment to preserve this artifact of Reno's past," Reno Mayor Jeff Griffin said.
