California biker wins at LVMS

Monday, Oct. 4, 1999 | 10:37 a.m.

Track preparation ate up nearly two hours of practice and qualifying time at the final round of the Hot Shoe National dirt track motorcycle championships at Las Vegas Motor Speedway's mile dirt oval.

The four main events proved to be excellent with San Jose, Calif., racer Gary Rogers winning the 883cc Harley-Davidson Sportster main event and the National championship.

The defending champion, Jess Roeder, riding the Las Vegas Harley Davidson-sponsored machine, finished second. Michele DiSalvo finished third, five points back. The Mitchell-Modesto Harley-Davidson shop received both first and second in the series championship.

Texan Scott Scherb won the 600cc feature and Tom McGrane barley beat out Roger Lee Hayden in the smaller displacement machines. Kevin Varnes had an easy time in the big-displacement class on his 750cc Harley-Davidson.
